Head of Eastern Mediterranean University Underwater Research and Imaging Center, Assistant Professor. Dr. Burak Ali Çiçek issued a warning saying that jellyfish are more commonly found in Cyprus waters specially in the February-April.
Burak Ali Çiçek stated that jellyfish, which feed on plankton and baby fish, wash ashores for food.
Noting that there is often an increase in jellyfish stings over the summer period, Çiçek said that they can also be seen in salty waters at any time.
“Global changes in the Mediterranean which are the major reason of the wide spread of jellyfish, effect us too” Çiçek was cited as saying. He emphasised that it is not associated with pollution or domestic waste (sewage, etc) in Cyprus waters. “By this way jellyfish density experienced, especially in 2009 spring and summer, can be examined. The proliferation this year is a similar situation. As far as we know right now, it is affecting the Eastern Mediterranean.” he said.

Preventive measures against jellyfish:
“Do not touch these creatures. Since its tentacles are transparent, they cannot be seen. It is crucial that they are not touched. In case of contact with skin, get out of the water immediately. To treat a jellyfish sting, rinse the affected skin with sea water, alcohol, ammonia or vinegar. Do not rinse the area with fresh water. After rinsing, try to remove the remaining stingers using tweezers. Wear gloves if you have them to avoid getting stings on your hands. Do not scratch or rub the area. A doctor should be consulted immediately in case of severe allergic reactions. After cleaning the area, it should be treated with ammonia (If there is no ammonia, vinegar or alcohol would do; urine can be considered in worse case scenario).” Çiçek said.
