KTAMS announces hunger threshold for a family of four

The Cyprus Turkish Civil Servants Trade Union (KTAMS) announced that the hunger threshold for a family of four, as of August 31, is 27,402 TL.

KTAMS President Güven Bengihan explained in a written statement that the calculation was based on the nutritional needs required for a healthy diet for a family of four, with data provided by the Department of Inpatient Treatment Institutions. The average prices of essential food items were gathered from the Statistical Institute and used for the calculation.

According to the study, the daily food expenditure for an adult woman is 235.85 TL, amounting to 7,075.50 TL per month. For an adult male, it is 245.96 TL per day, or 7,378.80 TL per month. For a child aged 15-19, the daily cost is 258.91 TL, totaling 7,767.30 TL monthly. A child aged 4-6 requires 172.69 TL per day, or 5,180.70 TL per month for a healthy diet.

Bengihan noted, “The monthly food expenditure, or hunger threshold, that a family of four must meet for a healthy, balanced, and adequate diet is 27,402 TL.” He also highlighted that inflation in the country was 3.28% in August 2024 and 19.19% over the last four months, based on official figures from the Statistical Institute.
