LCOY welcomes establishment of Bi-Communal Youth Technical Committee

The Local Conference of Youth (LCOY ) Cyprus has welcomed the recent decision by the leaders of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities to officially establish a Bi-Communal Youth Technical Committee (TCY).

In a press statement, the organisation highlighted that this development reflects their commitment to environmental peace and intercommunal cooperation.

Founded in 2022 by youth leaders and activists from both communities under the UN Environment and Peace for Youth Champions programme, LCOY Cyprus emphasised its ongoing efforts to promote meaningful youth participation in decision-making processes. The organisation provides a platform for young people to voice their concerns, share ideas, and shape a common future for Cyprus.

LCOY Cyprus reminded that the concept of a Youth Technical Committee was first introduced at the bi-communal climate conference in 2022, and they have consistently advocated for the committee’s formation through ongoing dialogues, consultations, and policy proposals.

While acknowledging the positive nature of the announcement, the statement also expressed concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the committee’s formation. LCOY Cyprus stressed the need for a fair, inclusive, and transparent electoral process.

To support this call, LCOY Cyprus submitted an official proposal summarising the key objectives and expectations for the Bi-Communal Youth Technical Committee. They requested to be involved in the development process of the committee to ensure broad youth representation and meaningful participation.

LCOY Cyprus stated that the formal recognition of the Youth Technical Committee is a testament to their persistent and strategic advocacy efforts. The initiative has garnered invaluable support from the United Nations, senior UN officials, and youth across the island. In 2023, meetings with Madam Rosemary A. DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, provided an opportunity to share this vision.

LCOY Cyprus highlighted the importance of the committee’s inclusion in the Secretary-General’s Goodwill Mission report, reaffirming their commitment to amplifying youth voices and continuing efforts to enhance youth representation both in Cyprus and globally.
