The Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) has criticized the Council of Ministers for its decision to permit the inspection and registration of left-hand drive vehicles without requiring import permits.
According to the MMO, this decision is both unlawful and a serious threat to traffic safety.
In a written statement, the MMO described the decision as “neither ethical nor principled” and claimed it amounted to complicity in endangering public safety. The organization warned that the move puts lives at risk and significantly increases traffic hazards. The MMO further argued that in other countries, such a decision could lead to the resignation of government officials responsible for its implementation.
The MMO urged the General Directorate of Police to evaluate the traffic safety risks posed by this regulation and to formally warn relevant institutions to revoke the decision.
The statement also advised the Vehicle Registration Office to escalate the matter to higher authorities and request written directives on how to proceed. The MMO highlighted potential financial risks for vehicle owners who proceed with customs and registration processes for left-hand drive vehicles without proper import permits or inspections.
Insurance companies were also called upon by the MMO to refrain from insuring such vehicles, citing increased safety concerns.
