Lightning caused fire, now under control in Nicosia

Forest fire fighting services patrolling a forested area outside Nicosia quickly spotted a fire near the village of Ayios Epiphanios Oreinis, caused by a lightning strike, as weather conditions change rapidly.

The Forestry Department said in a statement that its forces, assisted by locals, responded rapidly and set the blaze under control just after 11 this morning, before spreading.

Five firefighters in two vehicles tackled the fire along with four civilians.

The Department has warned the public not to light fires in-non designated areas and avoid activities that might lead to break outs.
