A series of explosions that disturbed the Zakaki area of Limassol on Monday night were caused by fireworks stored in a makeshift tin warehouse, according to authorities. The fire, which started for unknown reasons, erupted in a field near the city’s casino and quickly spread to two abandoned vehicles nearby.
Residents reported hearing the first explosion at 10:48 pm, and soon after, thick smoke engulfed the area. Witnesses described multiple loud blasts that caused widespread alarm.
The warehouse, located on farmland used for growing lettuce, was found to contain fireworks, which are believed to be the source of the explosions. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Pyrotechnics experts are expected to carry out a thorough investigation at the scene with the first light of day.
Fire Brigade spokesperson Andreas Kettis said that the initial blaze appeared to have started in dry grass. Police have cordoned off the area, which will remain under guard overnight while investigations continue.
