Limassol Zoo may be transformed into an ‘Animal Farm Park

The Limassol Municipal Council is set to vote on a proposal by the Cyprus Environmental Research and Education Centre of the Holy Metropolis of Limassol (KYKPEE) to revamp the Limassol Zoo. KYKPEE’s plan, recently submitted, calls for transforming the zoo into a new animal park named “Limassol Animal Farm Park.”

The proposal highlights the shortcomings in the current zoo’s operations and advocates for a more humane approach. It envisions a smaller park featuring farm animals, domesticated species, and Cypriot breeds housed in natural environments rather than cages. The focus would be on animal welfare, species reproduction, and conservation, with animals like goats, pigs, cows, horses, chickens, and local breeds on display.

Education is a key element of the proposal. The park would serve as a learning centre promoting animal and environmental awareness. Activities could include animal feeding, art competitions, guided tours, animal photography, volunteering, donkey rides, egg collection, and cow milking.

Additionally, the park could feature an exhibit on both local and non-native species, showcasing their ecology, behaviour, and habitat threats. Integration with the existing Municipal Garden would enhance educational offerings, attracting schools and institutions for field trips focused on nature interaction and experiential learning.

KYKPEE further proposes an outdoor photo exhibition chronicling the Limassol Zoo’s history, allowing visitors to learn about its evolution and past transformations
