A quake struck 45 kilometres east-southeast of San Pedro de Atacama at a depth of 117.4 kilometres at 9.50 p.m. local time, according to the USGS.
The US Geological Survey reported a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in northern Chile late Thursday.
The earthquake struck 45 kilometres (28 miles) east-southeast of the coastal town of San Pedro de Atacama, at a depth of 117.4 kilometres (73 miles), at 9:50 p.m. local time (0150GMT Friday).
There were no early reports of injuries or major damage.
Authorities said that the earthquake poses no danger of a tsunami.
Chile, one of the world’s most earthquake-prone nations, is situated on the Circum-Pacific Belt, often known as the “Ring of Fire.”
On February 27, 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake and tsunami devastated Chile, killing more than 500 people.
