Minister of Foreign Affairs Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu said that the Greek Cypriot leadership had begun parceling activities the Pile (Pyla)-Yiğitler (Arsos) Road, and said that the relations with the United Nations, which allowed these activities, needed to be discussed.
Ertuğruloğlu spoke to the press on the Road Project. Beyarmudu Mayor Bülent Bebek and Pile Turkish Mukhtar Veysal Güden were also present at the meeting.
Regarding the road project, Ertuğruloğlu said that it cannot be evaluated as if the UN or the Greek Cypriot side made a favor and the Turkish side would give something in return.
Claiming that the Greek Cypriot side has been using the buffer zone as its own territory for the past 30 years, Ertuğruloğlu said that the Greek Cypriot administration has committed violations in the buffer zone over the years. Ertuğruloğlu noted that the Yiğitler-Pile Road Project is a response to the 30-year-long violations of the Greek Cypriot side.
Ertuğruloğlu said: “Without an agreement with us or our approval, parceling works had started. “We emphasize that the Greek Cypriot construction equipment should stop work and leave the region as soon as possible,” he said. Ertuğruloğlu noted that the UN created an environment that threatened peace and was doing so deliberately.
Ertuğruloğlu said that the Greek Cypriot media and several circles from the North are attempting to create the perception that the Greek Cypriot side’s activities in the region have the approval of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government, and that they refrained from commenting in order not to disrupt the road construction. Ertuğruloğlu stated that the activities continued despite all the calls made to the UN. Warning that there would be a crisis in the region if the work continued, Ertuğruloğlu said, “the North has the right to discuss its relations with the UN, which so blatantly excludes the Turkish Cypriot people and, in particular, the Pile Turks and the Pile Turkish mukhtar.”
