MFA “Measures had to be taken in accordance with the principle of reciprocity”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a statement on the incident that caused tensions between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides.

In the official statement made two days after the incident, it was stated that the empty building, located to the west of the Metehan border in Lefkoşa (Nicosia) and known as Neriman’s house on the Turkish side and Maria’s house on the Greek side, was located within the territory of North Cyprus.

The statement said that “The Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) has been carrying out provocative activities by installing projectors and cameras on the guard posts opposite the empty building on the territory of the North Cyprus for quite a while. Such actions could be misunderstood and spoil the status of the buffer zone.”

“PRECAUTIONS HAVE TO BE TAKEN”

The statement said that the situation was monitored and necessary protests were made to the UN Security Council by both military and civilian authorities.

The statement is as follows: “As such actions by the Greek Cypriot side were continuing despite all warnings, necessary measures had to be taken within the territory of the North Cyprus (TRNC) in accordance with the principle of reciprocity.

“We would like to announce to the public that we will not allow any violation or fait accompli against the territorial integrity of the North Cyprus and that we will continue to take all steps in the region within the framework of reciprocity.”
