The Mormenekşe Culture, Arts and Producers Festival took place at the village square in Mormenekşe, organised collaboratively by the Yeni Boğaziçi Municipality, the Mormenekşe Contemporary Women’s Association, and MORDER. The event brought together local residents, artists, producers, and dignitaries to celebrate Cypriot culture in a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
The opening ceremony commenced with a moment of silence, followed by the national anthem and a folk dance performance by MORDER. Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar attended the festivities and spoke to attendees about the significance of cultural heritage, encouraging young people to embrace their traditions and values.
“It is vital for our youth to live with and uphold their own culture,” stated Tatar, emphasising the role of cultural identity in fostering national pride and promoting the country.
“We are a distinct people. We exist through our culture and art,” he declared, expressing confidence that the Turkish Cypriot community will continue to thrive and deepen its roots in these lands.
Hayriye Tokyay, President of the Mormenekşe Contemporary Women’s Association, highlighted the organisation’s efforts to enhance women’s economic participation while ensuring that Cypriot culture is preserved and passed down to future generations.
Saim Aytürk, the Mukhtar of Mormenekşe village, noted the significant progress the village has experienced in recent years and expressed his full support for similar initiatives in the future.
Atalay Talaykurt, a member of the municipal council representing the Mayor of Yeni Boğaziçi, underscored the importance of festivals in promoting the country and preserving cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu also addressed attendees, stressing that festivals play a crucial role in sustaining cultural vitality. He underscored the importance of cultural transmission for the future of the nation.
Following the speeches, the festival thrived with a variety of performances, including folk dances, children’s activities, a concert by Grup Otantik, and a presentation by the Çağdaşlar Choir. The diverse activities created a lively ambiance that celebrated tradition, community spirit, and artistic expression.
The Mormenekşe Festival not only highlighted the richness of Cypriot culture but also served as a platform for community engagement and artistic collaboration, successfully uniting people in celebration of their shared heritage.
