The Turkish Cypriot side is planning a full reopening of the fenced-off area of Varosha, in what is being interpreted as a countermeasure to recent arrests linked to property claim disputes, according to unconfirmed reports.
In a recent article, journalist and columnist Hasan Hastürer cited reliable sources claiming that Varosha will be opened in its entirety, signalling a significant step in response to the legal actions related to property issues.
According to Hastürer, the Turkish Cypriot authorities are preparing to remove the fences surrounding Varosha, thereby granting unrestricted public access to the area. Further, he noted that Varosha will be brought to an equal legal status with other properties in North, enabling Greek Cypriots to apply to the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) for property claims, just as they do for other immovable property claims.
While there has been no official announcement confirming the alleged plans, Hastürer’s article underscores that this move represents a strategic step by the Turkish Cypriot authorities, potentially affecting the ongoing property dispute and diplomatic relations on the island.
