The General Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Elikkos Ilias, places responsibility on the competent urban planning authority, which is the Municipality of Ayia Napa, regarding the illegal construction of a monastery in a protected area of the Natura network in Cape Greco.
According to Alpha News, the Municipality of Ayia Napa did not take the necessary measures to prevent the illegal construction of the monastery and to avoid what the law provides for the immediate demolition of the buildings.
The General Director underlined that the Ministry of the Interior will continue efforts to remove the illegalities and restore the site, with the assistance of the Legal Service.
“I hope that this is the start of everyone understanding that we have to abide by the regulations and we have to follow the procedures to secure a building permit. The Minister himself is giving instructions on this matter, we are not going to stop with all the legal means we have, we will exhaust them with the help of the Legal Service, so that this bad example can be avoided.” Mr. Ilias said.
Mr. Ilias called on the Archbishop of Cyprus to take a position on the issue which he described as “unacceptable.”
