Cyprus UNESCO National Commitee is publishing a new bilingual printing titled “CYPRUS LIVING HERITAGE”, also available in a digital format, recognizing the importance of safeguarding and promoting the intangible cultural heritage of the island, according to a press release.
The publication presents, for the first time, the 65 entries of elements of the living tradition of Cyprus on the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as the six entries of Cyprus on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
An event took place on Friday during which the publication was handed over to Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou by the President of the UNESCO Cyprus Committee Dr. Marina Solomidou Ieronymidou.
The publication is a unique, contemporary, on-site photographic record of people, places, traditions, practices, techniques, tools and objects of the living tradition of Cyprus, the press release read.
It includes the lively steps of Cypriot face-to-face dances, the geometric designs of Lefkaritika embroideries, the spirituality of the chanting tradition to the ancient arts of pottery and weaving, it is added in the press release.
The research and editing of the publication was undertaken by Dr. Antigone Polyniki. Photographs are by Nikos Louka and Emma Louise Charalambous.
