Minister of Public Works and Transportation, Erhan Arıklı, has announced that two potential formats are being considered for the new vehicle license plates, as the current system of two-letter, three-number plates nears its end. The alternatives are “AA 001A” or “001 AA,” with the final decision to be made by the Council of Ministers.
Speaking to TAK, Arıklı explained that the existing two-letter plates will be phased out within a month. While a proposal for three-letter plates was previously submitted, it was rejected due to concerns that it could be confused with South Cyprus license plates. The Insurers Association also expressed concerns about this transition.
Arıklı noted that only around 40 vehicles with ‘AAA’ plates are still in use in South Cyprus. To avoid confusion, the Ministry is presenting the two new formats and expects the new system to be in place within a month.
