North Cyprus ports ramps up privatization efforts

The Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı said that North Cyprus has moved forward with plans to privatise the ports in the country.
He stated that there are urgent arrangements to be made in Gazimağusa (Famagusta) and Girne (Kyrenia) Ports before the privatization process begins. Arıklı noted that the government will need approximately 5 to 8 million dollars for the port arrangements. He said that discussions with ship agencies have begun in this manner.
Noting that the Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Port is the government’s first priority, Arıklı said, “We have discussed the issue in the Council of Ministers meeting and have determined what needs to be done in order of urgency. Containers in Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Port cause visual pollution. A special area needs to be opened for containers and trucks as soon as possible. Security for us is a very important matter. Our first priority will be to bring a better system for borders to be checked, install camera systems, demolish old buildings, and rearrange passenger lounges.”

SECOND PHASE OF PRIVATIZATION

Arıklı added that privatizing the Gazimağusa (Famagusta), Girne (Kyrenia), and Gemikonağı (Karavostasi) ports will be the second stage, as the process will need time.
Minister Arıklı added that Gemikonağı (Karavostasi) Port also needs to be put into service urgently.
