Northern Cyprus grapples with traffic fatalities

In the past 40 days, nine people have lost their lives in traffic accidents in Northern Cyprus. Addressing this alarming trend, the General Assembly of Parliament placed traffic safety as the first item on its agenda during yesterday’s session.

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel acknowledged the severity of the issue, highlighting the lack of police personnel and resources as a major challenge. He noted that law enforcement equipment is outdated and insufficient, stressing the need for improvements.

To address these concerns, Üstel stated that efforts are underway to complete road infrastructure projects in collaboration with local administrations. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to improving road lighting by working closely with the Union of Municipalities.

“We are determined to ensure that no road remains unlit in the country,” Üstel said, adding that lighting has been incorporated into new infrastructure projects to enhance road safety.
