Outrage over litter on Mehmetcik beach


 

 

Beachgoers are angered by trash littered at the Mehmetcik (Galateia) beach, it has been reported.
As the summer season ends, citizens doing water sport activities at the Mehmecik (Galateia) beach dumped large amount of waste behind, Gıynık News reports.
Furious beachgoers are demanding action and are accusing the Mehmetcik (Galateia)-Büyükkonuk (Komi Kebir) Municipality for negligence.
Meanwhile, the wooden barriers that were used to protect Pancratium maritimum (‘Sand Lilies’) at the beach, which are also forbidden to pick as they are under the North Cyprus protection law, were reported to be missing.

PENALTY FOR CAUSING DAMAGE TO SAND LILIES

Sand Lily (Pancratium maritimum) is reported to be under law protection in the country.
According to the Environmental Law, it is one of the protected plant species in North Cyprus and it is prohibited to pluck, collect, destroy, own, exchange or sell them.
The penalty for violating the law is a fine of ¼ of the Minimum Wage Gıynık news reports.
