Polis Chrysochous and Pyrgos Tyllirias renew call for opening of Kokkina crossing

The Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofi, and the President of the Kato Pyrgos Tyllirias community Nikos Kleanthous, have reiterated their request for the opening of the Kokkina crossing in a joint announcement.

Ahead of a scheduled meeting on January 20 with the Turkish Cypriot side to discuss potential new crossing points, the two officials sent a letter to the Greek Cypriot leader, Nikos Christodoulides, urging him to prioritize the opening of the Kokkina crossing.

They emphasized the significant impact such a move would have, not only on the border region of Tylliria but also on the broader area of Polis Chrysochous, which has faced isolation and neglect since 1963.

“This is a unique and possibly final opportunity,” the statement reads, adding that the Greek Cypriot side must prioritize the Kokkina crossing among its proposals for new barricades. They cautioned that failing to seize this moment could make future opportunities unlikely.

The officials demanded that Christodoulides, treat the opening of the Kokkina crossing as a “red line” and an essential condition during discussions with the Turkish Cypriot side.

Recognizing the crossing’s vital importance, they expressed hope that Christodoulides would advocate for their cause, enabling the areas of Polis Chrysochous and Tylliria to emerge from decades of isolation. They argued that such a step would significantly boost the economic development of these regions, ultimately enhancing the well-being and prosperity of their residents.
