The Nicosia Criminal Court has scheduled the hearing for the preliminary objections raised by the defense of Turkish-Jewish land developer Simon Aykut for September 27 at 11 a.m. The objections challenge the court’s jurisdiction over the case involving property usurpation charges.
Aykut, who has been in custody since June, faces 124 charges related to the exploitation and sale of land in North Cyprus, valued at over €40 million. He appeared before the Criminal Court on Monday, although the hearing, initially set for 9 a.m., was delayed by two hours due to the need for a translator.
Aykut is represented by a legal team that includes two Greek Cypriot lawyers, a Turkish Cypriot lawyer licensed in the Republic of Cyprus, and an Israeli lawyer.
The proceedings were briefly interrupted upon the prosecution’s request and are expected to resume at 12:40 p.m., with two police investigators presenting evidence. The defense is likely to challenge the prosecution’s request for continued detention.
