US President Donald Trump made headlines with a tongue-in-cheek remark, saying he would be his own “number one choice” to become the next Pope.
“I’d like to be Pope,” Trump joked to a reporter, before commenting on the ongoing search for a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this month.
While Trump clarified that he had “no preference” regarding who should lead the nearly 2,000-year-old Catholic Church, he did note: “I must say, we have a cardinal out of New York who’s very good, so we’ll see what happens.”
The statement, though clearly made in jest, comes as the Vatican begins the process of selecting a new spiritual leader for the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.
