Retail trade in Cyprus up 5.6% in both value and volume in March

Retail trade in Cyprus marked a notable growth in March 2025, with both the Turnover Value Index and the Turnover Volume Index increasing by 5.6% compared to the same month last year, according to data released Friday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

The Turnover Value Index for retail trade, excluding motor vehicles, rose to 128.4 points (base year 2021=100), while the Volume Index rose to 114.7 points.

In the first quarter of 2025, the retail trade value index increased by 5.3%, while the volume index grew by 4.3% compared to the same period in 2024.

According to the official figures, the yearly expansion in March was driven by rising consumer demand across both edible and non-edible goods.

Food, beverages, and tobacco in non-specialised stores (e.g. supermarkets) led the value growth with a 7.1% increase year-on-year, and volume growth at 5.9%.

Clothing and footwear saw a significant 16.7% increase in volume and 7.4% in value. Cultural and recreational goods, including books, toys, and sports equipment, registered a 7.8% rise in both value and volume.

Household equipment, such as furniture and electrical appliances, also posted robust gains, with value and volume up by 7.1% and 7.7%, respectively.

On the other hand, automotive fuel recorded a decline of 1.3% in both value and volume and retail sales not in stores, including online trade, dropped by 4.3% in value and 2.6% in volume.
