Retailers – supermarkets satisfied with Easter essentials demand

Shopkeepers and supermarkets are happy with consumer demand during the Easter period especially on essential goods.

General Secretary of the Confederation of Pan-Cyprian Organizations of Craftsmen, Professionals, and Shopkeepers (POVEK), Stefanos Koursaris said that “in essential goods, as is customary during every Easter holiday, there was increased activity, even though prices for certain products were higher.”

He added that the market moved at satisfactory levels, considering that people spent money on the festive feast. “Most of the budget goes to those kinds of products,” he said.

He added that the increased prices in essential goods might be the reason why there was no increased consumer interest in other products, such as clothing and footwear, as is usually the case during Easter holidays.

Nonetheless, Koursaris positively evaluated the consumer preference for small businesses. “Despite the increased price of meat, people supported small businesses, the small butcher shops, rather than opting for the price difference found in the large supermarkets,” he said.

On his part, Andreas Hadjiadamou, Executive Secretary of the Pancyprian Supermarkets Association, expressed full satisfaction for the activity in supermarkets during the festive season, which, as he said, was particularly high, especially in the last 2–3 days.

“During this period supermarkets are in high demand, and after all our efforts every holiday season to offer the best possible service, prices were very good, and we tried to maintain stability, especially in the final days,” he said.

He estimated that supermarket activity this year was on par with last Easter, noting that everything went smoothly.
