One of Cyprus’s most iconic historical landmarks, the Selimiye Mosque in Lefkoşa—originally known as the Cathedral of Saint Sophia—is set to reopen for worship tomorrow following the completion of extensive restoration works.
According to a statement from the Cyprus Foundations Administration, an official reopening ceremony will take place at 2:00 PM.
The restoration, which began in 2019, was carried out in collaboration with the General Directorate of Foundations of the Republic of Türkiye. The project has successfully revitalised the centuries-old structure, restoring its architectural magnificence and ensuring its preservation for future generations.
This reopening marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to protect and celebrate Cyprus’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
