Non-fatal work accidents dropped by 35.5% in Cyprus in 2022 compared to 2017 (while the EU saw a 4.6% drop in the same perod), however lethal work related accidents increased from 2 in 2017 to 9 in 2022 (while remaining stable in the EU), according to data released by Eurostat on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work (28 April).
According to Eurostat, in 2022, 2.97 million non-fatal work accidents resulted in workers being absent from work for 4 days or more in the EU, while 3,286 work-related accidents were fatal.
Compared with 2017, there were 4.6% less accidents (-143 031) in the EU. In Cyprus there was a reduction of about 35.5%, from 2,070 accidents in 2017, to 1,335 accidents in 2022.
Most work related accidents in Cyprus in 2022 out of a total of 1,335 were in agriculture (1,184) followed by accommodation and food service activities (289), construction (255) and manufacturing (236).
In the EU, Manufacturing recorded the highest number of accidents in 2022, with 535,977 accidents (18.0% of the total), followed by human health and social work activities (469,764; 15.8%) and construction (364,486; 12.2%).
In terms of severity (the number of full calendar days when the victim is unfit for work due to an accident at work), in 2022, the accidents that resulted in 7–13 days absence from work still represented the most frequent type of accidents, as in 2017. There were 814,390 such accidents (27.4% of the total accidents).
The second-most frequent types of accidents in 2022 were accidents that resulted in 4-6 days of absence from work (558,678; 18.8% of the total number of accidents), followed by accidents that resulted in 1- 3 months of absence (531,936; 13.3%).
In Cyprus, for most of a total of 1,335 work related accidents in 2022 the severity was not specified (584), followed by the category of those that caused 7 to 13 days absence (225) and those that cause 1 to 3 months of absence (162).
