St. George church conservation works in Limnias completed

Conservation works on the church of St George in Limnias have been completed, Greek Cypriot co-chairman of the Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage Sotos Ktoris told CNA on Tuesday.

It is, he said, a beautiful building with the first phase dating back to the Frankish era.

During the works, historical graffiti came to light which was a practice of expressing the faith of ordinary people, a plethora of designs such as ploughs, sailing boats, wheels, human figures and inscriptions referring to vows and wishes of the people of the time, he added.

In his statements to CNA, the Greek Cypriot co-chairman of the Technical Committee noted that cultural heritage “is a tool for peace, which in addition to the protection and preservation of the monuments of the cultural heritage of the island promotes cooperation, peaceful coexistence and reconciliation between the two communities.”

The work was co-funded by the EU and the community and implemented under the supervision of UNDP.
