The Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions (KESK), representing labour and democracy struggles in Turkey, has issued a strong statement condemning the coalition government of UBP, DP, and YDP, which is aligned with the AKP government in Turkey, over recent religious-oriented education reforms in North of Cyprus.
In their statement, KESK criticised the recent regulation change and directive, asserting that these measures aim to reshape public institutions and education according to religious principles. The union highlighted that numerous education organisations in Cyprus, including local teachers’ unions, have voiced their opposition to these initiatives.
“Interfering with students’ lifestyles and attempting to regulate educational institutions under religious rules is unacceptable,” the statement read. It also expressed solidarity with those fighting for social peace, justice, scientific education, and a modern, progressive future.
KESK reasserted its stance against anti-democratic and anti-laïcité (anti-secular) policies, emphasising the importance of unity in opposing such moves. The union called on government authorities to reconsider these dangerous steps and to respect the fundamental principles of secular education and democratic rights.
