The forward momentum of the Sweden Democrats in elections in Sweden appears to have come to an end in Sunday’s European election, where support for the party dropped compared to the last election five years ago.
It was a good night for the Left and Green parties, while the Liberals managed to keep hold of their single seat in the European Parliament.
“(The Sweden Democrats) have never really gone backwards in any national elections before, so this is going to be an unfamiliar and rather painful experience for them,” says Nicholas Aylott, head of the Europe Programme at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
