Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said that he accepted the trilateral meeting scheduled to take place in New York in October to explain the new political stance once again.
“This is not a step back for me. If the invitation for this dinner comes, it will take place” he said.
Tatar briefed political parties about the ongoing process concerning the Cyprus issue and his meetings in New York.
Stating that the UN Secretary-General had mentioned that a trilateral meeting, held informally and without an agenda, would be beneficial to everyone, he said, “I couldn’t say ‘no’ to this, so I said ‘yes.””
Explaining that, after consultations with Türkiye, they proposed a 4+1 meeting that would involve both the Turkish and Greek sides, along with Turkey and Greece, Tatar added, “I believe our proposal will be considered by the Secretary-General.”
In his statements regarding the meeting, he reiterated that if there is to be an agreement on Cyprus, it is necessary to accept sovereign equality and equal international status, which he described as the earned right of the Turkish Cypriots that cannot be negotiated.
