Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has accused the Greek Cypriot side of engaging in provocative actions and maintaining aggressive policies, while affirming the Turkish Cypriot side’s continued readiness to cooperate on issues that serve the interests of both communities.
Speaking from the Presidency following his meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on Monday, Tatar confirmed that he once again raised the long-standing proposals to open new crossing points at Haspolat ( Mia Milia) and Akıncılar (Louroujina ) in order to ease congestion at the Metehan checkpoint.
He criticized the Greek Cypriot insistence on a “transit passage” between Kiracıköy ( Athienou) and Erenköy (Kokkina), calling it unacceptable and inconsistent with realities on the ground.
Tatar also expressed concern over increasing tensions regarding property issues and recent arrests in the South, warning that such actions jeopardize the delicate environment needed for dialogue.
“I told the Greek Cypriot leader that these aggressive moves, especially arrests, risk dynamiting the atmosphere,” he said.
On the recent appointment of María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Tatar expressed hope for meaningful progress, noting that the Turkish Cypriot side remains open to dialogue.
“Yes, there are difficulties and positions we find unacceptable, but on matters that serve the mutual benefit of both peoples, we are always in favour of cooperation,” he concluded.
