Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar strongly criticized recent Greek Cypriot initiatives concerning property rights in Northern Cyprus, accusing the Greek Cypriot administration of engaging in what he described as systematic legal and economic assaults against Turkish Cypriots.
Speaking on Wednesday, Tatar claimed that each time the Turkish Cypriot side makes strides in development, it is met with calculated efforts by the Greek Cypriot leadership to derail progress. “These attacks, characterized by their disregard for international law, have clearly become acts of terrorism,” he stated.
Tatar argued that the recent prosecutions and arrest warrants issued in the South regarding property in the North are reminiscent of the policies adopted after 1963. “Their aim is to economically cripple and legally weaken the Turkish Cypriot people, using property issues as a weapon, just like they did in the past,” he said.
He emphasized that the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), established in 2005 and recognized by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the landmark Demopoulos ruling, provides a valid and fair domestic remedy for resolving such disputes.
“The ECHR recognized the IPC not only as a legitimate remedy but also acknowledged the rights of those who have acquired property over the years, not just the original owners from 1974,” Tatar noted, underscoring that the Commission represents “a just and fair solution path.”
He accused the Greek Cypriot administration of trying to override this legal framework for political gain. “By disregarding ECHR rulings and criminalizing the property issue, they are undermining justice,” he added.
