Tatar prepares to present “new and constructive approach” at Geneva Cyprus talks

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has pledged to present the realities of Cyprus at the upcoming Geneva talks with a new and constructive approach. He emphasized that lasting peace, security, and prosperity on the island can only be achieved through cooperation between both sides and their respective states.

Ahead of the informal Cyprus meeting in Geneva, Tatar met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara. The closed-door meeting took place at the Presidential Complex, followed by consultations with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and a technical delegation from Türkiye that will participate in the discussions.

Speaking before the meeting, Tatar reiterated that any settlement in Cyprus must be based on sovereign equality and equal international status. He stressed that cooperation between the two states is the only viable path forward, highlighting potential areas of collaboration, including tourism, cultural heritage, energy, and natural resources. He called on the international community to acknowledge these realities without further delay.

Underscoring Türkiye’s role as a guarantor and Northern Cyprus’s strongest ally, Tatar pointed to Türkiye’s growing regional and global influence, stating that this strengthens the Turkish Cypriot position. In Geneva, he noted, the Turkish Cypriot delegation will sit alongside Türkiye, ensuring a strategic balance in the discussions.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz also reaffirmed Türkiye’s unwavering support for Northern Cyprus, emphasizing that their close cooperation is reflected in mutual visits and policy alignment. He stressed Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening Northern Cyprus’s economy and ensuring its sustainable development.

On the Cyprus issue, Yılmaz reiterated that a just and lasting solution must be based on recognizing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s (TRNC) inherent rights, including sovereign equality and equal international status. He warned against clinging to outdated and unsuccessful negotiation models, arguing that acknowledging these rights is essential for a sustainable resolution.

Calling for an end to the unfair isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people, Yılmaz advocated for the peaceful coexistence of two states on the island, which he said would contribute to regional stability and prosperity. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s position, echoing President Erdoğan’s call at the UN General Assembly for international recognition of the TRNC.
