Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has strongly criticised the 2023–2024 Türkiye report adopted by the European Parliament, calling it biased and politically motivated.
In a written statement, Tatar said that the report disregards the will of the Turkish Cypriot people and reflects the European Union’s continued partiality on the Cyprus issue.
Tatar accused the EU of abandoning its neutrality in 2004, when it admitted the Greek Cypriot administration as a full member despite the unresolved status of the island. “Expecting impartiality from EU institutions is unrealistic,” he said.
Referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to Northern Cyprus, Tatar said the visit was a powerful affirmation of Turkish Cypriot sovereignty and self-determination. He criticised EU officials who labelled the visit as illegal, describing their stance as “unacceptable and offensive,” and a direct affront to the identity and legitimacy of the Turkish Cypriots.
Tatar further condemned the EU’s dismissive attitude toward the Turkish Cypriot side, claiming that such approaches undermine the constructive atmosphere for dialogue acknowledged by the UN Secretary-General and obstruct efforts toward a lasting resolution.
