Tatar urges calm amid headscarf debate

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has issued a call for unity and calm following recent public tensions in the country over the government’s decision to allow students in second and high school to wear hijabs.

Emphasizing the state’s foundation on the principles and reforms of Atatürk and the rule of law, Tatar stated, “We are one nation. We must never allow discord to be sown among us.”

Stressing the importance of social cohesion, he urged the public to act with common sense and assured that law enforcement and the judiciary would take firm legal measures against any attempt to disrupt public peace.

According to a statement issued by his office, Tatar addressed growing concern over recent incidents tied to the headscarf debate, which he said had begun to affect social harmony and the functioning of state institutions.

“I believe the government and relevant unions, with mutual goodwill, will reach a constructive consensus on this sensitive matter,” he said.

He also warned against provocations during this delicate period, noting that while peaceful expressions of democratic rights had been observed by the state, some demonstrations had begun to disrupt essential public services, particularly in education and other official departments.

Tatar also criticised certain malicious actors on social media attempting to polarise society, calling them a direct threat to national unity.

“Those trying to sow division between the Turkish Cypriot people and our brothers from Anatolia are targeting the very integrity of our state,” he stated, urging the public not to give credence to such voices.
