The Church is not a counterpart to the Turkish Cypriot people on the Cyprus issue, says Erhürman

The leader of the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhürman has strongly responded to remarks made by Archbishop Georgios of the Greek Orthodox Church in his Easter message.

Erhürman said, “These impertinent statements are utterly worthless to us,” he emphasized that the Church is not a counterpart to the Turkish Cypriot people regarding the Cyprus issue.

Criticizing the Archbishop’s comments regarding the Cyprus issue, Erhürman said, “Let it be known that these insolent remarks are of no value to us whatsoever.”

Erhürman stated that the Church is not a counterpart to the Turkish Cypriot people on the Cyprus issue and recalled the role the Greek Orthodox Church has played in Cyprus’s political history.

He called on the Greek Cypriot political leadership to clarify who holds the authority.

Tufan said “The Greek Cypriot politicians – especially Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides – must clarify who holds the political leadership of the Greek Cypriot community and who has the authority to speak on behalf of the Greek Cypriot people regarding the Cyprus issue.”
