The historically significant meeting between President Joe Biden and President Nicos Christodoulides has commenced in Washington. The President of the Republic of Cyprus arrived at the White House approximately at 17:45, where he was welcomed by the Chief of Staff of the Oval Office.
This marks the first instance in 28 years, proving the substantial improvement of relations between the two nations. The last encounter at this level at the White House occurred in June 1996 between President Clerides and President Clinton.
The meeting will deal with recent developments in the Cyprus problem, the bilateral relations between Cyprus and the USA, and the situation in the Middle East, including the Republic of Cyprus’s role in delivering humanitarian aid during the significant crisis in the region.
The meeting between the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the President of the United States, Joe Biden, is scheduled for 11:30 (17:30 GMT) at the White House.
The meeting will include Minister of Foreign Affairs Konstantinos Kompos, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister of European Affairs Marilena Raouna, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus Evangelos Savvas, Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President Doros Venezis, and Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Salina Sambu.
From the US, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher, Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council Michael Carpenter, and Chief of Staff at the National Security Council Curtis Reed will participate.
Just prior to the conference, the partnership between the USA and the Republic of Cyprus regarding the enrolment of Cypriots at the Naval and Coast Guard academies was formally declared.
