The President of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhürman, stated that the primary concern in Cyprus is not the Republic of Cyprus’ potential NATO membership but the increasing militarization of the region.
Speaking on Muazzez Gazihan’s program on Haber Kıbrıs Web TV, Erhürman pointed out that NATO membership for the Republic of Cyprus is not feasible without a solution to the Cyprus problem, as Turkey holds veto power. However, he emphasized that the true issue lies in the growing armament in the region.
He highlighted actions such as the Greek Cypriot Administration granting a military base to the United States and opening the Paphos Air Base to various countries as part of an escalating militarization strategy.
“Which Republic of Cyprus?”
Discussing the topic of NATO membership, Erhürman reminded that Turkish Cypriots are equal founding partners in the constitutional order of the Republic of Cyprus. He questioned the legitimacy of unilateral steps taken by the current Greek Cypriot administration, stating, “Which Republic of Cyprus?” He emphasized that the constitutional order is under the guarantorship of the Republic of Turkey and criticized the administration for ignoring these facts.
“Insincere Approaches”
Erhürman also criticized the Greek Cypriot strategy of seeking NATO membership and increasing armament, describing it as an attempt to secure their position by confronting Turkey. He argued that this approach is counterproductive:
“This strategy is nothing more than an effort to protect themselves by creating conflict with Turkey. However, their reliance on the support of major states fails to consider that these states will act in their own interests, potentially obstructing the Greek Cypriot administration’s objectives. Ultimately, this will weaken their position.”
Erhürman concluded by calling for a sincere approach to resolving the Cyprus issue, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the international equal status of Turkish Cypriots. He criticized the current unilateral moves as undermining efforts for a sustainable solution.
