The worst Date harvest period!

Palm trees, one of the symbols of Lefke (Lefka), which were damaged due to the influx of red palm weevils, have now been hit by climate change.
While, Lefke (Lefka) Date (Hurma) Palm breeders, are preparing to collect palm fruits, they are also trying to prepare for the Lefke Date (Hurma) Festival to be held at the Lefke (Lefka) Bazaar Center on November 5th.
Speaking to the Bağımsız newspaper, 62-year-old Lefke Hurma Breeder Soner Yolaç said that there are about 2 thousand palm trees in Lefke (Lefka).

Yolaç said that each year, half of the two thousand palm trees are normally harvested, but that this year, only a maximum of 30 trees were produced. He blamed climate change for this situation.
Yolaç said that the trees that generally bloom in March and April were dried out due to exposure to temperatures above seasonal norms.
Along with the effects of climate change the trees have been extensively damaged by red palm weevils that cause the trees to have broken trunks.
Explaining that the profession has been passed on from his grandfather, Yolaç said, this is the first time that they have been faced with such a harvest period.
