There are 55 individuals with Down syndrome in North Cyprus


 

The Ministry of Health reports that there are 55 individuals with Down syndrome living in North Cyprus.

According to reports, there are 28 women and 27 men with Down syndrome. 76.7 % are under the age of 18, and 23.3 % are over the age of 18…
There are three rehabilitation centres for the disabled over the age of 18, in Karakum (Karakoumi), Güneşköy (Nikitas), and Gazimağusa (Famagusta), that operates under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Department of Social Services.
Six special education centres affiliated with the Ministry of National Education have facilities for individuals with Down syndrome under the age of 18.
The ‘Barrier-Free Living’ Home which it’s foundation was laid in Minareliköy (Neo Chorio) on February 19, 2016, to provide education and rehabilitation to individuals with special needs as a boarding school, has not yet been completed.
According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, the first stage of the ‘Barrier-Free Living’ Home building construction has been completed, and the bidding period for the second stage expires on April 4.
Families of individuals with Down syndrome are waiting for the ‘Barrier-Free Living’ Home to be put into service immediately.
The Barrier-Free Living Home will have an important role in meeting the education and accommodation needs of these individuals with special needs, especially those who are over 18.
Families expressed their concerns saying that they have taken good care of their children up until now noting that their biggest fear is ‘not knowing what will happen to their children when they are gone’.
