Former President Donald Trump stated on Friday that his unfulfilled promise to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours was made with a degree of sarcasm.
This admission came during an interview with the “Full Measure” television program, as his administration continues efforts to broker a resolution, now 54 days into his second term.
In a clip released prior to the episode’s airing on Sunday, Trump reflected on the bold claim he had made while campaigning for the presidency. “Well, I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said that,” he remarked. “What I really mean is I’d like to get it settled, and I think I’ll be successful.”
This represents a rare acknowledgment from Trump, known for his tendency to make exaggerated statements. During a CNN town hall in May 2023, Trump declared, “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.” He reiterated during a debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris in September, “That is a war that’s dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president. If I win, when I’m president-elect, I’ll speak to one, I’ll speak to the other. I’ll get them together.”
Trump frequently repeated this assertion throughout his campaign. Recently, his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, travelled to Moscow to discuss a U.S.-proposed ceasefire, which has found acceptance from Ukraine.
When questioned about his plan should Russian President Vladimir Putin refuse to agree to a ceasefire, Trump issued a dire warning. “Bad news for this world because so many people are dying,” he said, before expressing optimism over Putin’s responsiveness. “But I think, I think he’s going to agree. I really do. I think I know him pretty well and I think he’s going to agree.”
