Turkish Cypriot political leaders prepare for Cyprus talks in Geneva


 

Representatives from both ruling and opposition parties in Northern Cyprus are preparing to attend the extended informal meeting on the Cyprus issue in Geneva on March 17-18.

Prime Minister and National Unity Party (UBP) Chairman Ünal Üstel confirmed his attendance, accompanied by UBP Secretary-General Oğuz Hasipoğlu. Other coalition partners, including Democrat Party (DP)

Chairman Fikri Ataoğlu and Rebirth Party (YDP)

Chairman Erhan Arıklı, are also travelling to Geneva.

Political party representatives preparing to attend the Geneva meeting spoke to BRT.

Along with Arıklı, YDP Secretary-General Erşah Sabit Yılmaz and MP Talip Atalay will represent YDP. Arıklı, dismissed hopes for a federation-based solution, declaring, “For us, the federation fantasy is over.”

DP Secretary-General Serhat Akpınar, traveling with Ataoğlu, hinted at potential surprises during the summit, suggesting that developments could favour a two-state solution based on sovereign equality.

On the opposition side, Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Chairman Tufan Erhürman who will attend to the meeting, reaffirmed their commitment to contributing to initiatives that promote lasting peace and stability in Cyprus and the region.

The Communal Democracy Party (TDP) will be represented by Foreign Affairs Secretary Mine Atlı and Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı. A party statement emphasized their support for negotiations aligned with UN parameters and their commitment to constructive dialogue in Geneva.

People’s Party (HP) Chairman Kudret Özersay and Central Executive Body member Ahmet Tokatlıoğlu will also attend. Özersay stated that HP aims to contribute as much as possible and will provide post-meeting evaluations in the coming days.
