Turkish VP Yılmaz: “A solution in Cyprus can only be realized on the realities of the island”

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz said that the solution in Cyprus can only be built on the facts of the island. “Such a solution will also contribute to regional stability and prosperity,” Yılmaz said.

“Despite all the constructive and good intentions displayed by the Turkish side, it is out of the question for us to leave the unilateral actions against the rights of Turkish Cypriots, that have been ignored, unanswered,” Yılmaz said.

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar had a meeting with Yılmaz today.

Tatar and Yılmaz issued a statement to the press following the meeting.

Yılmaz noted that they held a very productive meeting with Tatar and that they evaluated the issues on the agenda.

Yılmaz said that they visited the new Ercan Airport terminal and evaluated the latest developments and problems being experienced. Yılmaz was accompanied by the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure and his technical delegation during his North Cyprus visit.

Stating that they will closely follow the necessary developments for the opening of the new terminal building, which was built with the support of Türkiye, Yılmaz reminded that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is planning to land at the new airport on July 20. Yılmaz said that they will swiftly complete the remaining issues in this respect and that they will take all necessary measures for Erdoğan to land at the airport on July 20.

Yılmaz also issued statements regarding contacts to be held in North Cyprus:

“Discussions will be carried out with ministers on the new projects to be realized, such as the harmonization of the general health insurance systems between the two countries, the construction of a social housing project in the Derinya region, and the electricity cable project.”

Stating the importance of having observer membership to the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), Yılmaz said that it is a significant indicator of a two-state approach.

The visiting Turkish Vice President said that the Eastern Mediterranean issue was also discussed alongside the Cyprus problem during the meeting, “Finding a just, permanent, and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue is one of the most important priorities of our country in guaranteeing the legitimate rights and security of the Turkish Cypriot people. We reaffirmed harmony on this issue with TC leader Tatar.” Yılmaz said.

Yilmaz said:

“Like the Greek Greek Cypriot duo, the European Union, which is representing them should no longer insist on observing the Turkish Cypriot side as a minority. As is known the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is our target.”

Referring to the European Union’s principle of not accepting countries, that are in dispute, as members, Yılmaz said, “It has violated its policy by accepting the Greek Cypriot side to the EU.” Yılmaz called on the EU to display a more balanced stance.

Also speaking on the Maraş (Varosha) issue, Yılmaz vowed to continue supporting efforts to be carried out by observing the rights of property owners. He pointed to the importance of accomplishing the Maraş region for the success of the economy, tourism sector, and social life. “We will work together with enthusiasm and excitement in the upcoming period to achieve our common goals.” Yılmaz added.
