M.Ş.A, and J.B, who had illegally crossed over to South Cyprus were caught red-handed in two different areas, trying to come back over to North, and were taken to court in Lefkoşa (Nicosia) yesterday.
A police statement said that M.Ş.A., had arrived at Ercan Airport on August 23, 2021, and crossed over to the south from a forbidden first degree military zone in the Yiğitler Burcu region at around 11 p.m. on the same day.
The police said that the suspect was detected at around 1.30 p.m. on July 11, by the soldiers on duty in the Rifle Company of the Security Forces Command, while trying to cross back over to North Cyprus, and was the arrested in flagrante delicto.
The officer requested for the suspect to be tried in custody noting that the investigation has been completed, and that the suspect has no ties or connections in North Cyprus, emphasising that he could escape if released.
Meanwhile another police officer said that J.B. who also violated the 1st Degree Military Restricted Zone from an unknown area in the Akıncılar (Louroujina) region in April 2024, was arrested in flagrante delicto on July 8, 2024, while trying to cross back to the north in the same region he had previously used.
The officer stated that an investigation has been completed and requested that the suspect be detained in custody.
Judge Jale Ergüden, who evaluated the testimony, ordered both suspects to be sent to prison for a period not exceeding two months.
