UNFICYP marked International Day of UN Peacekeeping


 

International Day of UN Peacekeeping marked in Cyprus.

UNFICYP’s Force Commander, Major General Ingrid Gjerde, together with United Nations Police – UNPOL Senior Police Advisor, Satu Koivu and the Mission’s leadership led the annual commemoration at the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia this morning.

UNFICYP peacekeepers paid tribute to all the men and women who have served as military, police or civilians over the past 75 years of United Nations Peacekeeping operations around the world. They also honored the memory of those who have lost their lives serving for peace.

In Cyprus , about 800 troops serve on a rotating basis. Over the years, more than 150,000 troops have served in UNFICYP.

Meanwhile Swedish Embassy in Cyprus shared the event on its Facebook page.

Embassy made a special mention to all Swedish peacekeepers that have served in UNFICYP.

The Swedish UN force on Cyprus was Sweden’s largest ever peace-keeping mission. It lasted from 1964 to 1993.

In all, Sweden provided 25 589 military personnel and 2 365 police officials to UNFICYP. During the mission, 17 Swedes lost their lives.
