Violence against women reaches staggering levels!

As in many underdeveloped countries of the world, violence against women continues in North Cyprus. Data following research has given the scary figures of violence against women.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ON THE RISE:

While one death (woman) report has been issued in the country between January and November 2023, a total of 831 violent incidents were reported. 423 reported physical violence, 181 verbal violence, 17 sexual violence and 209 other incidents.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS:

Although statistics reveal that hundreds of women in the country are subject to violence, the truth remains behind closed doors. According to research, in addition to “economic and social” reasons, “fear for life” and “family and environmental pressure” also cover up violence against women.

VIOLENCE IS NOT JUST PHYSICAL:

The violence women experience is still perceived as physical violence by many.

However, violence includes not only physical but also sexual, economic and psychological forms. Forcibly taking a person from one place to another by threatening them, and pressurising them is also a form of violence.
