Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides, stressed on Thursday that the current situation cannot be a solution to the Cyprus problem and that the Greek Cypriot side is ready for the resumption of talks.
Christodoulides, met with Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.
In a short tete-a-tete the two had in front of the television cameras, Mitsotakis said that “Greece and Cyprus are two countries that are pillars of stability in a very geopolitically troubled region of the planet” and that “especially at this juncture our coordination is more necessary than ever.”
Christodoulides noted that “it is always a special pleasure to be in Athens. Last night there was an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion” which was massively attended, and went on to speak of shared concerns, “taking into account the multiple challenges we face.”
“We will be together in New York next week, a crucial week. We will continue the path we demonstrate with actions, not words, to create the conditions for the resumption of talks. For us, I have said it many times and I mean it, the current situation is not the solution to the Cyprus Problem. I am sure that through the normalisation of Greek-Turkish relations, we will contribute even more to what Greece and Cyprus prove: that they are pillars of security and stability in this region of geostrategic importance,” Christodoulides noted.
On his part, the Greek Prime Minister, also emphasised that Athens and Nicosia are coordinating actions in view of the developments in the Cyprus issue and the UN General Assembly.
“We will once again be given the opportunity to take a comprehensive overview of the open issues at a time when, unfortunately, there is growing concern about the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Greece and Cyprus are two countries that are pillars of stability in a very turbulent geopolitical region of the planet. Especially at this juncture, our coordination is more necessary than ever,” Mitsotakis concluded.
