Dr Fahrettin Koca, the Health Minister of Turkey said today that forest fires that spread and damaged villages have claimed five lives and injured several more.
Koca posted on Twitter, “There were five fatalities and 44 injuries, with 10 of them sustaining serious wounds,” in two zones close to Mardin.
Pictures of a huge fire and thick clouds of smoke lighting up the night sky are making the rounds on social media.
Koca emphasised that 35 ambulances and four emergency response teams are present at the location.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that the fire started yesterday evening in an area roughly thirty kilometres south of Diyarbakir and swiftly spread due to strong winds, hitting five villages.
Regretfully, two people from Mardin province and three from Diyarbakir province passed away.
