According to a report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), it reports that the Mediterranean is 87 % polluted due to toxic metals, industrial chemicals and plastic waste.
The report noted that there are 1.9 million fragments per square metre in the Mediterranean, adding that this is the highest rate of microplastics ever recorded in the seas.
The report emphasized that freshwater bodies, air and soil are also affected by the pollution in the Mediterranean, and noted that deaths caused by factors such as air pollution and toxic chemicals increased by 66 % in the last 20 years, reaching 9 million per year.
