The appointment of a 19-year-old student as an adviser to the Deputy Minister of Tourism ( South of Cyprus) has sparked outrage in social media and among parties of the opposition in South of Cyprus.
Philenews revealed that a 19-year-old student was appointed as an advisor to Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumis, on an A8 salary scale which starts from €1,714 per month.
Both AKEL and DISY parties have released statements criticising the move.
AKEL has asked the appointment to be revoked, while DISY has condemned the government’s “inept handling, sloppiness, and ignorance of the laws”, which they exposed the young man.
In response to the controversy, Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Christodoulides, said that everything is being done within the framework of legality. He emphasized that he is aware of the Council of Ministers’ decisions and that any criticism should be directed towards the government, rather than individuals.
He also welcomed constructive criticism and urged people to focus on directing it towards the executive rather than personal attacks.
Meanwhile, the Audit Office said, the decision to appoint a 19-year-old without a university degree as an advisor to the Deputy Minister of Tourism is “blatantly illegal and abusive”.
The Audit Office urged the Minister not to go ahead with the appointment.
According to the current framework, government(South Cyprus ) consultants should be at least 21 years old and hold a university degree.
