72 -year- old woman fell victim of phone fraud


A 72-year-old woman, in Nicosia, fell victim to a telephone scam yesterday evening where scammers pretend to be doctors. The scammers managing to extort €52,000 from her.

According to what the 72-year-old reported to the police, around 2 p.m. yesterday, she has received a phone call from the landline of her home, from an unknown man, who introduced himself to her as a surgeon at the Nicosia General Hospital.

The suspect allegedly asked her for the sum of €57,000 for surgery, which her son needed to undergo, who was allegedly injured in an accident, while at the same time a second person could be heard on the phone crying and telling her that he was her son and that he had an accident.

A short while later, an unknown man went to the house of the 72-year-old, where he snatched a bag containing the sum of €52,000 from her balcony.

The police once again recommend special attention to the public, stressing that such telephone communications and claims are false and are intended to deceive citizens and steal sums of money
